The Importance of Prioritising Your Mental Health at University

Being a university student can be a tremendously challenging experience. There is a lot of privilege and luxury of even being able to access higher education, it goes without saying that this is an experience that comes with challenges that are designed and intended to push you to your limits to really discover your best academic (and even personal) selves. Any individual who has been a university student in any capacity knows this all too well. While there are many awards to be read from going to university, there is also a lot of emphasis on overcoming the challenges that go hand in hand with the university experience.

There are so many pieces of advice that are offered to individuals who take on the university experience that it can be quite difficult to sift through it all and figure out which pieces of advice are not necessarily worth having grain of salt to and which are worth investing engine time into taking into consideration. For me, the biggest and most important pieces of advice always came hand-in-hand with addressing the pressures that are associated with the commitment to higher education. There is a pressure that can be debilitating to some students and so it is really important to have the advice to be able to handle it adequately.

The pressures associated with commitment to higher education

There are so many pressures that it can ultimately become quite debilitating for any given student. No matter how good a student you are, the pressure associated with the commitment to university can be overwhelming to the point that they are challenging to see way past. However, it does not have to be this way. For me, the biggest and best thing I ever did when I went to university and continued to find my way through it was to focus on myself in as many ways as I possibly could. In this way, I was able to feel happier and myself and my environment and that’s my work reflected my mental state of mind.

The best piece of advice I can give as a university student myself

So, the best piece of advice that any university student can give to another is to take care of yourself first. You will hear so many times that the whole point of university is to actively engage in and exceed academically. While this is obviously true, it is also really important to acknowledge and understand that there is just as much importance and overall emphasis on taking care of yourself because if you were able to take care of yourself, you are able to focus happily and healthily on your academic standing. If you are able to focus on yourself, you will find that your academic standing often, if not always, south as a result.

Prioritising your mental health will lift a weight from your shoulders

Prioritising your mental health while at university might seem like a strange thing to focus on when it comes to listening to advice, however prioritising a mental health lift away from your shoulders and allows you to go through the academic experience with relative ease and transparency in a way that tips you above the the challenges and allows you to really find your footing.
