Why Do People Get Dry Skin

Do you have dry skin? Then you know just how frustrating it can be. But why do people have dry skin? And what can you do about it? Dry skin can be a result of your genetics, environment, and habits. You can take the proper steps of hydrating your skin to ensure it is the healthiest it can be. Not only will you be more physically appealing, but you will not have to deal with the itching, irritation, and redness that comes with having dry skin.

Dehydrated

A common reason that people get dry skin is because they are dehydrated. This can happen if you are not drinking enough water or fluids, or if you urinate too much or are sweating excessively. The moisture that keeps you skin looking young and fresh is from the water that you take in from your diet. It is advised that you try and drink about 8 full glasses of water a day at least. Some common signs of dehydration are dark colored urine, dry skin, and feeling thirsty. If this sounds like you, try to drink more water and have more water-filled foods throughout your day.

Genetics

Let’s face it, some of us are just born with dry skin. Dry skin and associated conditions such as eczema or psoriasis can happen just because of genetics. You could have dry skin just because of your inherited traits that you got from your parents.Think back to how long you have had dry skin for. If it seems like you have had dry skin for as long as you can remember and that one or both of your parents have dry skin, it could be all due to genetics.  The bad thing about genetics is that you cannot change them, but you can do things like drink a lot of water and use moisturizing skin care products to try and alleviate your symptoms.

Environment

Believe it or not, your environment can play a huge role in your skin’s hydration status. For example, if you live in a dry desert, your skin may be very dry and cracked. If you live in a tropical environment with lots of humidity in the air, your skin may have lots of moisture and need less attention. Of course you can still have dry skin and live in a humid environment or vice versa, but it can definitely play a role. Besides moving to another location, there are few things you can do to alter your physical environment. But, if you have dry skin, in any environment it is a great idea to use a humidifier in your home to reach your skincare goals.

Drying Products

What you think is helping, may be doing just the opposite. Some skin care products contain ingredients such as alcohols or sulfates that can be very drying to the skin and hair. Instead of using these harsh products with nasty ingredients, look for moisturizing or gentle products that include added fats and oils. Look for natural ingredients that will not irritate your body and skin. Some fantastic ingredients are beeswax, jojoba oil, and olive oil. Also, make sure to use your moisturizer or dry skin salve immediately after the shower to lock in the moisture to your skin and keep it hydrated all day long.

There are many causes for having dry skin, some of which you can control and some you cannot. Regardless of the cause you can always take steps to improve the hydration of your skin by staying hydrated and using the right skin care products. You do not have to suffer helplessly with your dry skin and can take matters into your own hands. Goodbye dry, parched skin, Hello glowing, radiant skin.
