Fresno State students will have an extra hour to cram for finals at Henry Madden Library.

From April 27 to May 13, the library will be open from 7:45 a.m. to midnight between Monday and Thursday. Operating hours will remain the same on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The move is aimed to accommodate students during finals, said Dave Tyckoson, associate dean of the library.

“Based on data from our exit gates, more people use the library late at night the last three weeks of finals than at any other time during the semester,” Tyckoson said.

Junior Nwachukwu Oputa said she likes that the library has later hours since she is unable to study on campus earlier in the day due to school and work.

“I always thought it was great they stayed opened late,” Oputa said.

Other students, like junior Natori Burgess, see the extra hour as a benefit to students who like to study somewhere other than their home.

“I think it’s good for people who prefer to study in the library,” Burgess said. “A change of scenery helps some people concentrate better.”

Almost all sections of the library, including the DISCOVERe Hub, will be open for students to use during the extended hours.

“You can use the collections, check out and return books and laptops, get help at the START Here desk, print documents and use library computers,” Tyckoson said.

The practice of extending library hours near finals is expected to continue in future semesters, Tyckoson said.
