Tough schedule to challenge newcomers

A new season means a new team, and this year’s women’s basketball team is gearing up for its season with a mix of new and old.

There are nine newcomers to the team and seven returning players.

“Looks like 6 to 7 [newcomers] will have significant playing time,” coach Adrian Wiggins said.

Out of the 16 players, six are from California.

This year will bring the challenge of having the toughest schedule since late 2005, when Wiggins became the coach.

Another challenge will be having the newcomers play in Division I basketball, Wiggins said.

Quickness, speed and outside shooting are the strengths of this year’s team, Wiggins said.

“Erica Henry and Tierre Wilson are key players,” Wiggins said of the two returning seniors. “LaShaunte Stephens, is a player you want to watch.”

The team’s first exhibition game is Sunday at the Save Mart Center against Melbourne Roos at 2 p.m.
