Fresno State Air Force ROTC wins High Flight Award
August 20, 2008
Fresno State’s Air Force ROTC Detachment 35 won the High Flight Award for AFROTC’s Southwest Region. The award honors the best unit of the year in the region, which extends from Mississippi to Hawaii, including all of California and Texas.
“This honor is a direct reflection of the hard work our cadets put toward their dreams of becoming Air Force lieutenants and future leaders for our nation,” said Lt. Col. Sam Vandiver, commander of the Fresno State detachment.
Fresno State won for mid-sized detachments that have 60 to 99 cadets, and will now compete against three other detachments for best mid-sized unit in the nation. That award, the Right of Line national award, is presented at the ROTC Commander’s Conference in Atlanta during the last week of October. All 144 detachments are represented there along with senior leadership and staff from various headquarters.
Fresno State’s Class of 2008 sent five new Air Force lieutenants to pilot training, three each to personnel, logistics and financial officer billets, two to navigator training and one each to medical school, USAF Nursing Corps and intelligence officer school.
In May, the detachment also won its fifth-straight annual championship in field day competitions against Berkeley, San Jose State and Sacramento State.

Campus Master Plan Web page offers information
April 29, 2008
A Web page with information about the proposed Master Plan update at California State University, Fresno is available at www.csufresno.edu/masterplan.
Nearly half a century ago, planners mapped a footprint for the campus to meet the needs of 20,000 students. With growth that has exceeded that figure (last fall Fresno State enrolled a record 22,388 students) it’s time for an update in planning and accommodations.
A proposed new Master Plan will take Fresno State through the next 20 years and beyond. The plan is scheduled for presentation to California State University Trustee for approval later this year.
To read an article about the Master Plan in FresnoState Magazine, see http://www.fresnostatenews.com/Magazine/FSMagSpring08-MP.pdf.
Welty attending national summit
April 29, 2008
Dr. John D. Welty, president of California State University, Fresno, is one of the invited participants in the Higher Education Summit for Global Development at the Department of State in Washington, D.C., today and Wednesday (April 29-30).
Rwandan President Paul Kagame will join Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings and U.S. Agency for International Development Administrator and Director of U.S. Foreign Assistance Henrietta Fore at the summit.
Welty is among the 200 university presidents from the U.S. and overseas, and corporate and foundation leaders invited to attend. The summit aims to strengthen the role of U.S. and foreign higher education institutions in social and economic development worldwide.
The summit will highlight innovative ways to build educational capacity, expand research, and encourage the exchange and application of technology.
Along with other educators, Welty will help promote new partnerships that will benefit developed and developing countries through faculty exchanges.
Chestnut Avenue reopens
April 28, 2008
Chestnut Avenue, from Shaw to Bullard avenues, east of Fresno State, reopened Friday, April 25, for through traffic.
Temporary traffic control will be in place because of work yet to completed at intersections of Shaw/Chestnut and Bullard/Chestnut that includes new traffic signal poles and equipment.
A new roundabout at the intersection of Barstow and Chestnut avenues is fully functioning for both north-south and east-west movements. Campus traffic officials urge drivers of cars and bicycles, as well as pedestrians, to slow down and exercise caution in approaching the new roundabout and when moving through it. There is also a roundabout at Bulldog Lane adjacent to the entry to the Save Mart Center’s North Lot.
This new section of roadway was made possible through a $4.6 million grant from the state’s Traffic Congestion Relief Program. Chestnut Avenue was widened to four lanes from Shaw to Barstow and three lanes from Barstow to Bullard.
The project also included a new parking lot for Fresno State’s Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market at Chestnut and Barstow, as well as many other utility infrastructure improvements for both the campus and the city.
The project was done in conjunction with the city of Fresno and the Campus Pointe development team.

African American life in the West conference to showcase the Valley’s diversity
April 25, 2008
The Central Valley Institute for Regional and Historical Studies is hosting a scholarly conference examining the history of African-American life in the West this Saturday starting at 10 a.m. in the University Business Center.
Event coordinator Elvia Rodriguez said the idea for the conference was developed by history professor Daniel Cady, Ph.D., who is a scholar on the topic.
“I originally wanted to jar my friends at USC and other well-known institutions to get them to convince their students to come to Fresno State for serious research work,” Cady said. “Historically more stories die than live, so my concern wasn’t to revive the history, but to show the scholarly worth done in the Valley.” Read more
Lecture examines news coverage and race
April 25, 2008
Since the middle of February, the Central Valley Cultural Heritage Institute has been offering a cross-lecture series at Fresno State.
On Thursday, Kelley Campos McCoy, Ph.D., discussed how it is easy to blame the media when it comes to issues relating race and gender, in an interactive lecture titled, “News Coverage as it Relates to Race”.
She explained that the lecture was concerning “journalists and race, not journalism and race.”
“What is race?” McCoy asked.
The audience was silent. Read more
Fee Advisory Committee recommends hikes totaling $52
April 24, 2008
The Campus Fee Advisory Committee at California State University, Fresno approved on Wednesday two student fee increase recommendations – totaling $52 – which will be forwarded to the president.
The recommendations call for an increase in the Instructionally Related Activity (IRA) fee: one calling for a $20 increase per semester for educational activities; the second calling for a $32 increase to support campus intercollegiate athletics.
The vote came after an hour-long open forum at which students and faculty members expressed views both favoring and opposing fee hikes.
Currently, the IRA fee is $10 a semester, which funds educational activities, field trips and other learning experiences sponsored by an academic program, discipline or department related to instructional offerings. Students contribute $7 per semester from their Student Body Fee to athletics.
The committee’s recommendations will be sent to President John D. Welty, who will make the final decision on any fee increase.
The committee’s charge was to review the results of a non-binding referendum April 8-10 in which students opposed a $70 per semester IRA increase that called for $20 to be dedicated to project funding and $50 for athletics. Students disapproved of the proposal by a 777-412 vote. The fee advisory committee also voted not to support that proposal.
Approximately 5 percent of the university’s 22,000-plus students voted in the election, which also decided student body officer positions.
Dr. Paul Oliaro, vice president for Student Affairs and committee chair, said he would draft a memo on the recommendation and send it as soon as possible to the president. No timeline for Welty’s decision has been determined.
Fresno State team wins international business competition
April 24, 2008
A team of six California State University, Fresno MBA students won in three categories at the 44th annual International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition, April 17-19 in San Diego. The competition tests students’ abilities to manage a simulated company against other collegiate teams.
On the Fresno State team were Ryan Finfrock, Kyle Goodman and Nevin Hindiyeh, all of Clovis; Alyson Udell of Paso Robles; Clint Stitser of Reno, Nev.; and Kirsten Years of Fresno. Their advisers were lecturer Charlene Coe of the Department of Management and Dr. Manuchehr Shahrokhi, the Craig Fellow Professor of Global Business-Finance.
The Craig School of Business team won first place in Stock Market Investment, Overall Performance of the Company and Report Writing categories, defeating teams from California State University, Long Beach, Mount Vernon Nazarene University of Ohio, and Willamette University of Oregon. The competition also included teams from Canada, Europe and the United Arab Emirates.
“The most valuable thing about this competition is the reality of how it works,” Finfrock said. “Each competing university was a business within an industry and decisions made the industry react like real businesses would. When we would increase advertising higher than other businesses, we might see our market share go up and theirs go down. Or when we would terminate an employee to cut costs, our other employees may become more fearful of their job security and possibly resign. This real-life interaction between decision making and accurate, realistic results was what was most educational.”
The competition “enabled our team of MBA students to utilize the knowledge gained through the Craig School of Business MBA program and directly apply it to real-world scenarios,” Hindiyeh said.
Added Years, “Teamwork was the key element to our success. Each of us brought a different skill set and perspective that together made for a winning competition. I learned just how well a disparate group of individuals can come together for a common purpose.”
The competition starts in February each year and lasts about 10 weeks, conducted online as teams prepare a comprehensive strategic business plan.
“The competition provides an excellent opportunity for the team to work closely around the clock, fiercely debate issues, disagree, build consensus make decisions and wait for the result of such decisions” Shahrokhi said. “It is so sweet to see their faces when the decisions they made turn out to be the right ones.”

Welty addresses Earth Day
April 22, 2008
To: Campus community
From: John D. Welty
Subject: Earth Day
Please join me today in celebrating Earth Day as we consider our role as individuals and as a university community in being good stewards of our resources.
As more of us inhabit the planet, it’s imperative that we all develop habits that help us meet our environmental challenges. Fresno State is committed to setting a good environmental example for the more than 25,000 of us who study, teach and work at Fresno State and for the community we serve.
The agricultural practices on our farm, our 4,000-tree Arboretum, the solar panels on parking stalls in Lot V and recycling efforts throughout the campus are just a few of the ways we underscore our concern about sustainability and the environment.
As I’ve said many times, our favorite colors at Fresno State are cardinal and blue, but we think green looks pretty good, too.
