Students protest cut hours with library study-in

Students took over the Henry Madden Library at California State University, Fresno on Friday night to push the administration to extend library hours.

Ninety-four students, along with several staff and faculty members, remained inside of the library after it closed at 5 p.m. Students who were present said they planned to stay inside the library for 24 hours.

Traffic advisory – Saturday, November 21st

In preparation for traffic and parking needs for Saturday’s football game at 2 p.m., Barstow Avenue will become a one-way street going westbound between Chestnut and Cedar avenues beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 21st.

Also Saturday, doors open at the Save Mart Center at 7 p.m. for the Kiss concert. Event traffic will be directed onto the campus only through Chestnut Avenue. Read more

Trustees Approve Budget Proposal Focused on “Recovery, Reinvestment”

The California State University Board of Trustees today approved a $3.2 billion budget proposal for 2010-11 that includes an $884 million state General Fund increase aimed at “recovering and reinvesting” funding in the CSU. The budget would increase the system’s General Fund support to $3.2 billion from its current reduced level of $2.3 billion.

The CSU’s state support has been cut by $625 million, or 21 percent, over the last two years. The CSU is asking the state to restore funding for one-time cuts imposed in the current 2009-10 budget totaling $305 million. Read more

H1N1 nasal spray clinic at USU

Fresno State’s first H1N1 vaccination clinic – with nasal spray vaccine only – will be held Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the lower-floor Pavilion of the University Student Union. Use the south side door into the Pavilion to enter the line.

The clinic, sponsored by University Health and Psychological Services, is free and open to students, faculty and staff who are under 50 years old, not pregnant and in good health. A Fresno State ID card is required for vaccination. Read more

CSU Outlines Enrollment Cuts and Preview 2010-2011 Budget

Facing a $564 million budget cut for this fiscal year, California State University Chancellor Charles B. Reed provided an update on the drastic measures that the CSU is undertaking to address the deficit including slashing enrollment by more than 40,000 students, as demand to attend the CSU continues to rise.

CSU estimates that it cut 4,000 students in fall 2009, and will see a much larger drop in spring as a result of curtailing enrollment including the elimination of spring admissions. In all, CSU needs to reduce its student numbers by more than 40,000 students in order to match student enrollment with funding received from the state. Read more

Zimbra maintenance tonight

The Zimbra system will undergo scheduled maintenance with e-mail and calendaring unavailable from 10-11 p.m. tonight, Nov. 8, to allow ITS staff to make recommended changes to reduce the likelihood of outages on Monday. After the maintenance is completed, the instant messaging function will be disabled.

More information on last week’s Zimbra problems and efforts under way to correct them will be provided Monday morning.
