Once the scattered droplets of rain ceased to fall upon Visalia’s Goshen Park, cars slowly began to trickle into the gravel parking lot. The players of the Central California War Angels women’s football team got out and finished putting on their pads and jerseys as they headed toward the field.
For Jordan Brink, Chris Mariscal, Jordan Luplow, Shota Runge and Taylor Tempel, competing on the diamond together is nothing new. All five spent a majority of their years playing for the same teams while growing up in Fresno and Clovis.
Entering her 27th season as head coach for the women’s softball team, Margie Wright continues to bring excellence to the program. The coach not only owns an NCAA title (1998), but also is the all-time winningest coach in Division I softball history with a record of 1,261-429-1.
With the new season of Fresno State softball, a familiar face will look to build on her career as well as cement her legacy at Bulldog Diamond. Senior Andrea Ortega will enter her final season at Fresno State, where she has established herself as a premier outfielder after being named to the 2011 All-Western Athletic Conference team and is a preseason All-WAC selection this season.
Aaron Judge came on like a hurricane last season, batting .358 and earning the Louisville Freshman All-American and the Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year awards. College Baseball Insider also named him a preseason honorable mention All-American for the 2012 season.
The 2012 softball schedule is already underway, but the Bulldogs have a full slate of competition to look forward to in the coming months.
Fresno State baseball fans will be well acclimated with Beiden Field this season, especially for much of the first two months of competition.
