Federal funds boost CSU class offerings, retain lecturers

The California State University system will add course sections and classes for students thanks to a one-time $25 million fund, according to a news release from CSU officials.
California State University, Fresno will receive approximately $1.4 million from the fund, said President John D. Welty in a video release. This allocation will allow Fresno State to add over 200 course sections and retain approximately 50 lecturers.
“Although the funding is provided on a one-time basis, it is good news for our campus and system and will allow us to help students get the courses they need to progress in their studies,” Welty said. Read more
Students march, voice frustration

Hundreds of students from California State University, Fresno marched Wednesday to protest recent fee increases, class cuts and furloughs handed down from the CSU system.

Fresno State Jazz bands add rhythm to Halloween

Two student Jazz bands will perform in the annual Jazz-O-Ween concert, Thursday, Oct. 29, at 8 p.m. in the Music Concert Hall (Music Building, Room 126) at California State University, Fresno.
The event also will include a performance by the Fresno State Monk/Mingus Jazztet, a jazz combo comprising six students performing music in the style of jazz musicians Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk.
Both groups of musicians will perform in costume, and audience members also are encouraged to dress in costume. Read more
Fresno State receives ag research funding

(October 19, 2009) – California State University, Fresno, three other CSU campuses (San Luis Obispo, Pomona and Chico) and the CSU’s numerous research partners are celebrating the inclusion of $693,000 for the Agricultural Research Initiative (ARI) in federal appropriations for 2010.
The ARI focuses on new technologies that have the potential for improving food safety, environmental stewardship, economic performance and long-term sustainability of California’s agriculture industry.
The funding approved by Congress last week represents part of a sustained commitment to ARI by the federal government, which has awarded the program nearly $3 million over the past five years. The agricultural appropriations bill was sent to President Barack Obama and is expected to be signed.
Road work near campus continues

Grinding and repaving work on Shaw Avenue will continue tonight as crews begin work on eastbound Shaw Avenue. Grinding will occur in the evening and paving during the day.
Vehicles parked along eastbound Shaw between should moved by 5 p.m. today. Any vehicles parked along eastbound Shaw this week are subject to being towed. Read more
Phishing scam attacks campus email accounts

Fresno State email accounts have recently come under phishing scam attacks. The spoof emails appear to be sent from a campus computer support staff and ask for personally identifying information such as a Fresno State user ID and password.
Legitimate emails from Fresno State’s Information Technology Services will never ask for personally identifying information, and ITS warns against responding to spam emails. Read more
