Four nationally renowned artists kick off Conley Art Gallery’s spring semester [gallery]

Four nationally renowned artists showed their work at the 2nd annual Artist Invitational at Fresno State’s Conley Art Gallery. Although artists Kirkman Amyx, Richard Bruland, Roger Lee, and Hadieh Shafie all work with different media, a common theme was present in their works: all pieces illustrate a meticulous and repetitive process or method of creating art.

Associate professor of art Nick Potter organized the event with the assistance of the Conley Art Gallery committee, a group within the art department that is responsible for setting up shows at the gallery. “I really like the way the works connect to each other. That’s the most impressive thing to me,” Potter said about the works in the exhibit. “When you look at one work next to the other, the mediums almost start to blend a little bit. It’s something you have to see in person to realize how strange it is that it can happen.”

The exhibit opening reception on Jan. 24 had a great response, Potter said. It runs through Feb. 10 at the Conley Art Gallery, located west of lot A on the Fresno State campus.

2012 Art Invitational Gallery

The 2012 Art Invitational was held at the Phebe Conley Art Gallery on Tuesday, Jan. 24. Kirkman Amyx, Richard Bruland, Roger Lee and Hadieh Shafie were the artists on display, each bringing a different medium to the event. The overarching theme to each of their pieces was the time-consuming and obsessive manner in which they were made. The event is open to the public from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. through Feb. 5.

Dogs finish homestand with 2-1 record [video]

Fresno State polished off the 3-game homestand with a win over the Cal State San Marcos Cougars Wednesday. The ‘Dogs played a physical game and dominated the boards helping them to a 4-4 home record this season.

Tensions rose throughout the game due to former Bulldog Tim Steed’s return to the Save Mart Center. The ‘Dogs had no game plan when it came to preparing for the Cougars’ big guard.

Kevin Olekaibe came alive in the second half scoring 8 of his 14 total points after a slow first half. Coming off a career-high 30-point game Saturday, the fan favorite guard was less of a factor against the Cougars draining only 8 of his 27 shots from the floor.

The ‘Dogs were flat in the first half but came out stroking in the second half outscoring the Cougars 40-29. What led the ‘Dogs to the nonconference win was a surprising performance from guard Jerry Brown.

The Bulldogs went on to beat the Cougars 66-55.
