The Central Valley Institute for Regional and Historical Studies is hosting a scholarly conference examining the history of African-American life in the West this Saturday starting at 10 a.m. in the University Business Center.
Event coordinator Elvia Rodriguez said the idea for the conference was developed by history professor Daniel Cady, Ph.D., who is a scholar on the topic.
“I originally wanted to jar my friends at USC and other well-known institutions to get them to convince their students to come to Fresno State for serious research work,” Cady said. “Historically more stories die than live, so my concern wasn’t to revive the history, but to show the scholarly worth done in the Valley.”

“Sing me a song of social significance,” a popular 1930’s song from the Broadway musical “Pin’s a Needles,” was one of many topics discussed at Thursday’s women’s herstory month lecture by Jill Fields, Ph.D., the author of “An Intimate Affair: Women, Lingerie and Sexuality.”
This lecture is one of several events this month celebrating the history of women and promoting gender equality in America.
Fields said informing people about the role of women in history is extremely important because it’s currently not incorporated into the required history curriculum.

On a typical day, equestrian team captain Katie Nenneker wakes up at 5:30 a.m. and heads over to the Student Horse Center to get some riding in before class. After classes are finished, she comes back again for more practice and doesn’t leave until 10 p.m. (more...)

An audience of more than 50 roared when the Benjamin Boone Quartet climbed on stage Saturday night and began wailing their first number, “Sugar.” This was the second of four performances the Benjamin Boone Quartet is doing at Fresno’s Rogue Festival in the Tower District.
