Far removed from their homeland, many Hmong learn to thrive in California’s Central Valley

Manlia Vang has called California’s Central Valley home all her life. Not so for her parents, or some of her older siblings.

The fifth oldest of 13 children, Vang was born several years after her parents immigrated to America from a Thai refugee camp in 1980. They were among the first wave of Hmong refugees fleeing from war-torn Laos, the traditonal Hmong homeland.

 
 

Crafting costumes for the stage

Aubree Walker, a theatre arts design tech major, works on the costume for Angus, a character in Fresno State’s production of Macbeth. The costumes for the show, which opens Friday, were produced by the students in the advanced theatre craft class. Each costume took about 50 hours to make. “It was really, really intense,â€? student Dana Cooper said.
Nestled in the back of the Speech Arts building is a small but spacious classroom that serves as a costume workshop.

 
 

Master of multicultural counseling

Dr. Song Lee, an associate professor in the counseling, special education and rehabilitation department, recently received one of the nation’s highest awards in counseling. Lee, who fled war torn Vietnam with her family when she was a child, may be the only Hmong speaking Ph.D. in counselor education in the United States.
In the war torn jungle of Laos, a then 2-year-old, Dr. Song Lee began the flight that would take her from Vietnam to Fresno.

 
 

“Speed-the-Plowâ€? aims to please

Fresno State students Christine Andrews, Daniel Moore and Elliott Montgomery star in the Experimental Theatre Company’s performance of “Speed-the-Plow.â€? The ETC play is a student-run production, directed by theatre arts student Brandon Lindner. The play marks Lindner’s directorial debut.

Fall enrollment numbers jump

Out of all the CSU campuses, Fresno State had one of the largest gains in enrollment for 2006, according to the latest data figures.
According to statistics compiled by Institutional Research, Assessment and Planning, the total enrollment for students in the fall semester has been increasing steadily the past three years.
