Bulldogs players will need to execute to win

This is as talented of a Bulldogs team that has ever graced Jim Sweeney Field, as a combination of youth and veterans look to take down opponents from yet another murderer’s row of a schedule.
Fresno State coach Pat Hill is big on the word execution when he talks about his team’s key to success, so here is a rundown of some key Bulldogs players and their keys to execution:
Offense
• Chris Denman (right tackle): Denman has added 25 pounds since last year, and he still has his tenacity to go with it. His ability to run-block will only be enhanced and it now looks as though the right side of the line will be the running game’s strength.
• Joe Fernandez (wide receiver): The key to Fernandez’s success is his route running. His cuts on the break are quick and precise, making him a key member to the offense in third down situations.
• Dwayne Wright (running back): Wright is up to 226 pounds, and it’s safe to say the new weight is all muscle. Worries about Wright’s knee can be put to rest, as the junior back’s previously injured left knee is now stronger than his right. Wright’s acceleration and burst are also as good as ever, and if he gets into the open field, good luck to the opposing tacklers.
• Tom Brandstater (quarterback): Has a big time arm and better speed than what people think. His sub-par numbers in fall scrimmages shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Has very good composure and has improved on the short and mid-range passes.
Sleepers:
Isaac Kinter (tight end): Has very good hands and speed; can beat linebackers.
Chastin West (Wide Receiver): Break away speed and had maybe the most impressive camp of anybody.
Bobby Lepori (left tackle): Has the task of protecting Tom Brandstater’s blind side. Also made great strides in camp.
Defense
• Vince Mays (free safety): It’s taken awhile for Mays to develop, but his time has arrived. Mays is one of the defenses biggest ball hawks and has a chip on his shoulder to boot.
• Jason Roberts (defensive end): Physical specimen can cause havoc on passing downs. Will see a lot of action this season.
• Ahijah Lane (linebacker): An aggressive hitter who loves to get his hands on the ball. Lane makes good reads on the quarterback, but he can’t get to caught up on the pick or he’ll get burned.
• Damon Jenkins (cornerback): Finally started showing a will to put the pads on somebody this fall. He has excellent speed and acceleration. Going up against his receiver teammates in practice is starting to help him develop.
Sleepers:
Trevor Shamblee (linebacker): Simply unbelievable athlete. A playmaker who’s tackles can add up and can blitz for the sack.
Damion Owens (cornerback): True frosh is the real deal. Is aggressive and ambitious.
