Fresno State track and field member Zinzi Evans was one of the 17 athletes on both the men’s and women’s squad to earn an award. Evans won the Outstanding Track Performer Award on the women’s side.

Skits, hall of fame inductees and a Hawaiian theme highlighted the annual Fresno State Track and Field program’s awards banquet, Wednesday.


About 200 people attended the event at the Satellite Student Union where Bob Fries, Mike Ostrum and Shannon Lieder were recognized as this year’s Hall of Fame class.


Junior Ryan Moore was named the Linder Track Man of the Year and was a co-winner of the Captain’s Award with Matt Studwell. Juan Valdez and Adam Andresen were named Outstanding Performer in track and field, respectively.


For the women, Mallory Webb received the title of Herzog Track Woman of the Year, while junior Zinzi Evans took home Outstanding Track Performer and Katie Richardson took home the award for field performance.

Tennis teams each honor four athletes

The Fresno State women’s tennis team will head to Berkeley for the NCAA women’s tournament May 12-13.


The men’s tennis team was not included in the 64-team field of competitors for Division I.


Meanwhile, both the men’s and women’s squads celebrated the 2006 season in their annual awards banquet Tuesday evening.


On the men’s team, freshmen Jordi Ballester and Rudolf Siwy were honored with the Bulldog Spirit Award.


Junior Jakub Cech was named the team’s MVP while Senior Sam Gibbs received the Most Improved Award.


On the women’s squad, Freshman Bruna Paes earned the Most Improved Award while Seniors Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter were named the Most Inspirational players.


Freshman Melanie Gloria was named the team’s MVP.

Gifford wins academic award

The National Wrestling Coaches’ Association named Fresno State junior Greg Gifford to the 2005-2006 All Academic Team, Tuesday.


Gifford was among 68 wrestlers named to the team. Gifford qualified with a 3.41 GPA, meeting both the academic and athletic requirements. To qualify, a wrestler must be an NCAA qualifier with a 3.2 GPA or carry a 3.0 GPA and be an All-American.


Gifford was also named as the male George Ilg award winner, representing the university in academics, athletics and community works.
