Finally, someone noticed.
And this time, the “someone” is the Western Athletic Conference, who announced Sunday that Fresno State women’s basketball guard Mirenda Swearengin is the 2005-2006 Player of the Year. With the title, Swearengin was also named to the All-WAC first team along with teammate Amy Parrish, who was named to the squad last year.
In addition, Jasmine Plummer was named to the All-WAC Defensive Team. The junior guard ranks third on the squad in rebounding, while leading the team in steals (65) and blocked shots with 50.
The senior guard missed two chances this season to finish with two career triple-doubles against Hawaii and Utah State. Both times, she was one assist shy.
Going into this week’s WAC Tournament in Reno, Nev., the transfer from Mexico Junior College averages 12.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game.
