Equestrian competes for first time this season in University of Georgia’s Big Eight Invitational
In the opening show of the Bulldog equestrian season, the Bulldogs won one duel and lost to Oklahoma State 368-351 in the fifth-place match at the University of Georgia's Big Eight Invitational. The Bulldogs lost to Texas A&M in the first round and defeated Baylor in the consolation round Friday.
Fresno State competed with seven of the top programs in the nation, including Georgia, South Carolina, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M.
Women’s soccer comes up short on two-game road trip
Fresno State went on the road to face No. 5 Santa Clara and then open up conference play against Nevada in Reno. Despite strong efforts, the Bulldogs come up short in both games losing to Santa Clara 2-0 and to Nevada 4-2.
Junior Cortney Sobrero did not start (coaches decision) for the first time this season, snapping her streak of 15 consecutive matches started dating back to last year. She entered the contest with 11 minutes remaining in the first half.
Against Nevada, freshman forward Alison Sill scored her first two career goals, however the Wolfpack rallied from a two-goal, first-half deficit to defeat Fresno State.
Fresno State falls to 3-8-1 overall and 0-1 in the WAC, while Nevada improves to 7-4-1 and 1-0 in conference play.
The Bulldogs will resume conference play against Idaho on Friday.
Women’s tennis duo narrowly misses out on ITA All- American National championship title
Seniors Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter lost in a match to Catrina and Christian Thompson of Notre Dame in the final of the ITA All-American doubles championships. Notre Dame, ranked No. 2 in the nation, beat the Bulldogs 9-8 (7) for the first national championship of the 2005-06 tennis season. It was the first appearance by any Fresno State doubles team in a national championship match.
The Bulldogs were down 6-7 late in the match, but rallied to take an 8-7 lead. Notre Dame then tied the score at eight to send the match into tiebreakers. Tiebreakers reached 7-7 before the Irish won 9-7.
Sainz and Winterhalter had won six consecutive matches before losing to Notre Dame. The Bulldogs knocked off three doubles teams in the top 10 during their improbable run at the title.
Men’s tennis duo Jakub Cech and Sam Tadevosian win 8-1 in doubles final of Bulldog Classic
On the final day of the Bulldog Classic, junior Jakub Cech and sophomore Sam Tadevosian dominated in the final of the Flight B doubles competition, beating Jeremy Drean and Jason Nguyen 8-1.
In the doubles consolation final of Flight A, Senior Sergiu Modoc and junior Charles Irie lost to Jonas Mouly and Oscar Plotnik of San Diego 8-6.
In doubles competition, the Cech/Tadevosian combination went 3-0, while Irie and Modoc were 2-2.
UCLA's Mathieu Dehaine beat teammate Jeremy Drean 6-4, 6-4, for the Flight A singles title. Tom Liversage of San Diego won the Flight B singles final, defeating Mike Ricks of Washington 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
