International students still fight discrimination

Today's fame comes cheap

Letter to the Editor

An administrative mishap

On Saturday, I received a letter dated April 26, 2005, from CynthiaTeniente-Matson at the office of the vice president for administration.

In it, she wrote that some of my personal information (name, mailing address, e-mail address, student ID number and date of birth) “was accidentally disseminated via electronic mail to 563 other students.”

She urged me to contact the three major credit reporting bureaus to complete an automated phone-in fraud alert. She also asked that I go to the University Help Desk to change my password for my my.csufresno.edu account.

I called and left a message at the ooffice of the vice president for administration, and was contacted Tuesday by a representative. I confirmed that the above information was the only information released and was again urged to go to the help desk to change my password.

I asked how this happened, and was told “human error.” I asked if I was the only person this happened to, and I was told no, that it happened to a number of other students.

I am giving you this information so you, through The Collegian, can let everyone know that this has happened so that every student knows the university may have sent out their personal information to students and the information could possibly be misused. I also ask that you find out just how this could have happened, because it does not make sense to me.
