'Debbie Does' it right

Student play takes satire stab at classic adult film

By ERIKA LINDQUIST

With big bright smiles and perky faces, five innocent high school cheerleaders bounce around, flip their hair, shake their red pom-poms and do sexy exaggerated moves in their white mini-skirts. They can dance.

They can sing. And they can make cash in ways they never thought of before.

Senior theatre arts major Alex Lawrence directs “Debbie Does Dallas,” an Experimental Theatre Company musical that humorously mocks the 1978 adult movie of the same title.

The play opens Friday.

The audience will enjoy the fast-paced goofy humor throughout the performance.

A large letter with gold wings for little blonde Debbie Benton (Jodi Cox), the head cheerleader, falls from the sky and announces she is one of the new Dallas Cowgirls. She jumps with joy and then realizes she has no money to get to Dallas, with only two weeks to figure something out.

Fortunately, Debbie is willing to do anything to make money and her friends are willing to help.

A man named Mr. Greenfield (Mark Wilson) hires Debbie, and tells her there are other jobs girls can do to make money. After a few uncomfortable moments, innocent Debbie agrees to let him look, then touch her chest and finally performs a sexual act for $40.

Excited at how easy it was to make that much cash, she tells her friends about it at a slumber party.

The girls discuss ways to perform sexual acts without losing their virginity. With bananas, a candle shaped like a penis, a book for spanking and other miscellaneous tools, Debbie’s friends find silly ways to make money to help.

Throughout the play, several acts of humorous “fake” pornography take place through dancing, rolling on the ground, slapping and other sexually suggestive moves.

A famous scene from the original film of two naked girls in the shower is played by two of the cheerleaders who rub big yellow sponges over their bodies and scream exaggerated orgasmic sounds.

But don’t get your hopes up. There is no nudity in this musical. Debbie gets down to a bra and panties towards the end of the play to make her last wad of cash by fulfilling Mr. Greenfield’s dream of having sex with the top cheerleader.

Mr. Greenfield dresses up as a football player and Debbie puts on her Dallas Cowgirls uniform. They make love on top of the counter as it spins in circles to humorous music and dancing cheerleaders in the background.

At the end, Debbie not only makes enough money to go to Dallas, but also enough to take her friends, too.
