Some schools had very strict bans on any advertisements relating to alcohol, while the larger campuses tended to have larger circulations and more lenient advertisement policies. The Collegian, Fresno StateТs newspaper, fell somewhere in between these two extremes. While we allow alcohol advertisements, a predominant disclaimer must be included on all ads that says, У XYZ promotes responsible drinking.Ф A total of five schools: CSU Fresno, San Diego, Fullerton, Pomona, and Long Beach, have this requirement, although the specific size, wording and placement policies were not available. The Collegian does not publish ads that contain or are associated with the following: gambling, sexually explicit content, racism, or drinking alcoholic beverages in a non-responsible manner. Many of the other papers had policies similar to those of The Collegian. Only the Daily Sundial of Northridge had no restrictions for alcohol or adult entertainment. The Daily Sundial follows the New York TimesТ goals of advertising, and it is posted in the beginning of their advertising policy as follows: УWe at The New York Times have always felt an obligation to keep our advertising columns open to all comers, refusing ads only on the grounds of fraud or deception, vulgarity or obscenity and incitement to lawbreaking or to racial or religious hatred. In pursuit of policy, The Times has printed many advertisements setting forth ideas we abhor but feel no right to censorТ (The New York Times, June 16, 1972).Ф Most papers stated that their policy was per advertisement, and that ads must be in good taste with appropriate integrity and that they are subject to approval. Roughly 8 of the 23 papers display all printed ads on their Web site, and 11 of them display both print and classified ads or classified ads only. One surprising finding was the lack of continuity across the board in regards to where policies are found, who has access to them and their content. Only one paper, the Golden Gate Xpress, in San Francisco, had no alcohol policy. The other 22 papers had policies, but the content of the policies varied greatly. The Daily Aztec in San Diego stood out above the rest. Their policy was clear to read and find, it addressed specific subjects and gave precise guidelines as to what was or wasnТt allowed. In closing, The Collegian is a well-put together newspaper that does a good job connecting with its readers. Our paper boasts the lowest cost per reader rate compared to all other CSU papers. It is evident that the students, staff and faculty working for The Collegian pride ourselves in providing the campus with a newspaper of the highest quality and service.
