I’m considering a career in law. I think that’s something that most parents would be excited to hear their kid say, but I’m not 100% sure yet how mine will react. My parents were never big fans of lawyers, and I remember that they used to drop comments about our “litigious society” and stuff like that when I was growing up. What advice would you give me for breaking the news to them that I’m considering contributing to what they see at “lawyer overload?”
You’re at an exciting time in your life, and a lot of career options are open for you. Hopefully, your parents understand that this is your life to live, not theirs, and that they should support you in every sensible and healthy choice you make. Going into law is a perfectly sound idea, and hopefully you’ll be surprised to see how well they take it and how quickly they forget their past views of lawyers and the law!
Of course, there are no sure things in life, and even our most treasured loved ones can occasionally disappoint us. So there’s no reason for you not to think about your position a little bit ahead of time, and we’re happy to help.
First, it’s fair to note that your parents are not alone in their views, and that at least some statistics back up their position. The United States has more lawyers per capita than any other country, and by that and some other measures is indeed the most litigious society on Earth.
But, some critics answer, having a lot of lawyers isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The United States also has a lot of firefighters, and few people are complaining about that. Could it be that, even with all our lawyers and lawsuits, we still aren’t taking enough legal action on the whole? That’s the argument of experts who note that only a small minority of injured Americans ever file suit.
Personal injury lawyers Surrey, Vancouver boasts at Preszler Law second this view. Their perspective as Canadian attorneys is that personal injury lawsuits offer a vital path to restitution for people who have been wronged, and that’s as true in other countries as it is here in the United States.
On top of all this, there’s one rather obvious piece of this puzzle that is worth remembering: not all lawyers file lawsuits! There are plenty of other areas of law besides civil litigation, and you may well find yourself far away from the world of personal injury lawsuits.
With some luck (and some love), we hope your parents will see that there are two sides to this issue. And even if their minds don’t change, they should offer you support as you venture on to the next stage in your education. If they don’t, that’s not your fault–and this is your life, so chase your dreams!
