Soccer WAC title decided in final minutes
Host and second-seeded Fresno State couldn’t find the back of the net, as the top-seeded Utah State Aggies defeated the ‘Dogs in a 1-0 nail-biter for the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Tournament championship.
Freshman Jade Tarver scored for the Aggies, squeezing in a shot past freshman goalkeeper Katie DeVault, with seven minutes remaining in the game.
The Bulldogs controlled the tempo of the game outshooting the Aggies 15-5, but Aggie goalkeeper and tournament MVP Molli Merrill held off the Red Wave and recorded her sixth shutout of the season with five saves.
The Bulldogs suffered their only home loss this season and first to Utah State in the postseason (3-1) in Sunday’s championship game.
The ‘Dogs finished the season 11-5-5 overall and 4-1-2 in the WAC.
