As finals week looms, students are staging a study-in at the Henry Madden Library, which closed at 5 p.m. today.

Around 20 students were in the library as of 6 p.m. this evening to protest the early closure during the end of the semester study crunch.

Tizoc Lopez, a finance major, stood outside the library with a bullhorn and spoke to the media on behalf of the students inside. “A lot of students work in the day and they’re able to study at night,” he said. “The student union is all filled up. The hundreds of students that need to study can’t all fit in one student union. The library is made for thousands of students.”

Satvir Dhah, an undeclared sophomore, said he was outside the library Friday evening until midnight, which was closed to him and other students but open to participants in the library’s Wizard of Oz conference. “I think it’s kind of ridiculous that they can find space for another event and not make space for students that need to study and use library services,” he said.

The library has extended hours for finals week, staying open until midnight from Monday to Wednesday. A full schedule of their finals week hours is available on their website.
