California State University Chancellor Charles B. Reed gave an update last week, previewing further cuts that will face the university.

The CSU estimates that it cut 4,000 students this semester and is planning on more drastic reductions for the spring 2010 semester, according to a press release put out by the university.

“Last year, we declared system-wide impaction and said we were going to reduce enrollment by 10,000 students,” Reed said in a press release. “By spring, we will reach that total and project an even larger enrollment decrease for fall 2010.”

Reed also unveiled the proposed 2010-11 budget that the CSU is calling the “recover and reinvest” budget.

The budget, which will be presented to the board of trustees this week, asks the state to restore funds that were cut this year, as well as an additional $579 million.

The funds being asked for total $884 million. Part of the proposed funds include a ten percent student fee increase, which the university is asking state legislature to “buy out” on behalf of students.

At this point, the CSU needs to cut the number of students enrolled by more than 40,000 students in order to compensate for reduced state funding, according to the press release.

“You cannot see a 20 percent drop in revenue and serve the same number of students,” Reed said.
