For those who are less inclined to go out into the sunlight and prefer exercising their imagination rather than their muscles, there’s Heroes Comics.
Heroes has been in Fresno since 1989, in one incarnation or another. It presently makes its home inside of a building that used to be a bank, complete with a storage room that was once a vault.
Every Wednesday, Heroes has the latest editions of funny books and action figures. But comics are not the only merchandise. Heroes also comes complete with posters, T-shirts and collectibles.
The lion’s share of the floor is home to the old standards, the characters that tend to be a little more mainstream.
However, two corners of the building have their own purposes. One corner is aimed toward the younger fan while the opposite corner is for the adult fan. When it comes to comic ratings, the term “adult” can be used as the equivalent of an R or NC-17 rated movie.
For collectors, the store has a variety of comic book bags, boards and boxes for storage. They also carry back issues and can order any special requests.
Heroes was recognized in 2005 as the runner-up for the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award, the most prestigious of comic-related awards.
Patrons seem to agree that Heroes is efficient and well stocked.
“It’s one of the better comic book stores I’ve been to,” customer Ryan Dion said. “Just the way they have things laid out is pretty organized.”
