WEB-SPE@K: What should Welty do to help students?
By Collegian Staff | November 1, 2009
What do you think President Welty should do to help students affected by cut classes and increased fees?
What will you ask Welty at the Peace Garden meeting?

Retire
In my opinion, telling students that we are still getting higher education for the lowest price around should not be President Welty’s response to everything. Yes, that is a bright, positive way to look at it, and we are very blessed to have that oppurtunity, but the student’s need real answers. We need to know real asnwers so we can know if we are going to be able to graduate on time. We need to know the cold hard truth because some student’s plans are going up in smoke right now and to avoid that we cannot have President Welty ignoring the hard questions. I think he needs to speak to us like the adults we are, good or bad. We all know he does not hold ultimate power to our education costs, we do not expect him to be our fairy godmother and rescue us, but we deserve to know the real answers at least.
It should be noted that, while Welty may not be advocating for the students etcetera as much as he could
be, all of the blame should not be placed on him. Once Welty resigns, as some want him to do, and the problems continue who will we blame? I suggest students push him to fight for the students at Fresno State as opposed to the little that he is currently doing. There is no need for him to resign yet, maybe take greater salary cuts to show he really cares about what’s going on with faculty, staff and students, but not resign.
I believe Mr. Welty has to come out and speak the truth. In my mind he has been a great President for CSU Fresno. He was done so much. I don’t think he is in control of the fee increases it is the big time people in Long Beach. The students must realize that these are very hard times for everybody and should be thankful that they are in the University trying to better themselves. President Welty should attempt to build some kind of memory base in the minds of the students to say that these are hard times just to be straight up to the point no B.S. To, Jim Carrone I agree Mr. Welty should not resign at this point this is not his fault. Many, should also these are changing times if your going to go to college you should major in something that is going to get you a job. That is just my opinion.
I think that the focus on this whole issue is being displaced. The real problem is in Long Beach and in Sacramento. The walkout was a good start to the student movement but this needs to be taken out of Fresno and into Sacramento, pressure needs to be applied to not only the Governor but also the Board of Trustees, we have 3 Board of Trustee members out here at state alone!!! Why are they not being confronted? I am not saying that people shouldn’t be looking at Welty for some of this, he did raise our fees when we voted for him not too, but who controls his salary? It’s the Board of Trustees, who rose our fees? The Board of Trustees. Who got us into this mess? The Board of Trustees!!!
He should first stop pretending to be a person that is not in a postion of privelege. Then he should stop acting as if he cares for all students. He only cares for certain ones that fall into specific financial and class backgrounds.
then he should finally admit that students educationis being privatized so that they cannot act civically within the CSU system, they have to take it to the CEO on the 4th floor. then he can come tomorrow and negotiate the list of demands students proposed after the walkout.
Dr. Welty can do two very simple things… one of which he has already said No to, the other he would also say No to because the sharehold… I mean the Board of Trustees like dollars.
1) Rescind the pay raises he just voted for for himself and senior administration officials. The argument that their salary is well below the average is just asinine. time and time again we have been told this is a stat eof crisis and we need to band together and do what we must to weather this storm. Well, i see courses cut and some faculty being dismissed, but I am not seeing the upper echelons do much by way of sacrifice.
2) A very long shot I know, but you can take some of that WOEFULLY BLOATED athletic budget we seem to always have and sprinkle some of that financial rain into areas of EDUCATION that are being virtually eliminated by this crisis. I know that diverting athletic funds away from an athletic program and into education pursuits is radical, but now is the time for this kind of approach unless we would like to continue along this path.
I
He wont help students…he already statede that clearly in yesterdays event in the Peace Garden. He said no to all of the above possible compromises and negotiations.
He should stop listening to these ideologically motivated students who are simply doing this to satisfy a warped and twisted political ideology and start doing his job, paying attention to what the real problems are.
I really believe that Welty was speaking the truth about many things that were spoken from his words. But you have all these students trying to prove their point whether it be for a student club or just want to look good. It was horrible to see the young lady crying but she must realize that everybody doesn’t have health care. It was really funny suggesting President Welty take a pay cut. Give me a break! If they asked me to do that I would just start laughing. Working in the medical field I have found out their are plenty of dead beats that don’t pay their medical bills. It that supposed to be societies fault No! My thing is you play you pay. It goes back to all the demands or the students they are just upset that they lost a little financial aid money big deal. They don’t want to take out loans that is on them. It is these types of students that want to, “Milk the System.” Get over it! This is part of life. Thumbs up to Mr. Welty!
give the keys of the university to the student body, Student Power!!!
“give the keys of the university to the student body, Student Power!!!”
who is going to teach us then? or are universities just going to become big social clubs?
1) the people who teach are not the people with “the keys of the university”
in fact, 2) the people who teach you are, in many cases, more inclined to agree with recent protestors
I think that he should do SOMETHING. everything he is doing now i just hurting the students. He looks down from his balcony and is untouched by the budget woes. How has it personally affected him? Me i lost my job because of it. But i know that athletics got new grass and dirt it didn’t need but it’s national champ coach wanted. money was spent to upgrade the field behind the south gym so people can TAIL GATE. The academic side gets no money for sports camps held on university property. That was the cost of my salary. the Library fourth floor is out of touch with the students and their needs.
