In a time of budget cuts, increased fees, and red numbers, the Fresno State athletic department has an unexpected surplus of money.

Despite previous negative projections for the 2009-2010 budget, the athletic department is now projecting an approximate surplus of $130,000. According to Martina Buckley, the associate athletics director for business operations, there are several reasons for the unexpected surplus of money in both the 2008-09 and 2009-10 budgets.

“[For the 2008-09 budget], the money received from the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and the NCAA totaled an approximate $228,000 increase,” Buckley said. “We also extended a contract with Learfield, which led to a $227,000 influx of revenue. There was also a non-operating savings of $264,000.”

Buckley explained the dramatic turnaround.

“The ‘08-09 budget was $25,399,631,” Buckley said. “As of December 2008 the projection indicated that we would finish $1.1 million in the red. Thus, we implemented a seven percent cut in each of our sport and unit budgets.”

Just as the 2008-09 budget finished with a surplus of money, the 2009-10 budget is expected to finish with a surplus.

Buckley said the projected surplus was due to cost-cutting measures and ticket gate revenue, among other things.

“All the sports, as far as I know, were required to cut their expenses a couple of times to meet the anticipated deficit,” Watney said in an e-mail interview.

Men’s head basketball coach Steve Cleveland confirmed that cuts were made.

“All of the athletic teams took a 15 percent cut in their operational budgets,” Cleveland said in an e-mail interview with The Collegian. “We also reduced out guarantee game budget by $62,000.”

The Fresno State athletic department, as well as Buckley, were very happy about the unexpected surplus in the 2008-09 fiscal year and the projected surplus for the ‘09-10 year.

“We were extremely satisfied that all athletic departments made the required reductions in expenses along with the additional revenues that resulted in operating surplus for the fiscal year,” Buckley said.

According to Buckley, the revised budget for 2009-10 has yet to be approved, but he estimates it will be approximately $23.6 million.

“The ‘08-09 surplus will be applied to our fund balance,” Buckley said.

Watney also has thoughts on how the money should be used.

“It should probably go into a rainy day account, just in case,” Watney said. “It would be nice to get some money back. Each sport has different needs so hopefully each coach would be asked where they would like to use the money.”
Buckley said the budget will be made available to the public in approximately a month.
“The budget will be made public once the 2008-09 financial statement is approved by the [Athletic Corporation] Board and then the university president [John Welty],” Buckley said.
The 2009-10 budget will also go through an approval process. According to Buckley, this should take place by the end of September or the beginning of October.

Wow! While there is a surplus of money at athletics….our ASI government thinks its best to keep pumping money into sport programs…..while at the same time vut the funding to poor ol student clubs. Goodbye Raza events, goodbye Jim Crow demonstrations, and oh cant forget our Asian persuasion to get up and move to beautiful majestic dances.

if the raza events would be eliminated, i’d be a happy camper—nothing like racial disharmony paid for by the student dime. and can this potentially lead to men’s soccer and wrestling reinstatement in better economic times if continued!!!? Not likely (maybe in a perfect world)—-i know half of this surplus is probably due to road football games at Rutgers, UCLA, Wisconsin, and Cincy and payments made to short our home schedule.

LOL what do you mean, is that a derogatory comment or just a silly joke. But i do drink kool aid along with all that other food that makes me feel like we appreciate multi-culture and yes we can say we support ethnic studies and all that fancy stuff that makes us feel like this community is multi-ethnic, but in the end, it is all based on a white conservative society. No joke. im just telling you how it is.

  13. I second that says:

Harper you are correct. No matter how brown, black or any other color this community claims to support and be pro-active for, there is too much of a conservative based governance on this campus and in the local government. Its all based on the traditional agri-business that favors these values.

Anyone who tries to argue otherwise needs a good history, economic and political crash course session on this valley.

i second that—-so you’re a vegan, feminist, who doesn’t own a car, and lives in a communal housing unit??????——i bet you buy into the system as well—-don’t act like you’re holier than we are. These universities are designed to build a social middle class strata, a viable workforce of the not wealthy and not poor——and nothing more—-they’re not intended to promote whiteness………..this campus SHOULD do away with ethnic fraternities/sororities and Mexican independence day celebrations, however. Those groups aren’t beneficial to the masses

    Thanks HARRY KUNTZ……your statement of

“…this campus SHOULD do away with ethnic fraternities/sororities and Mexican independence day celebrations, however. Those groups aren’t beneficial to the masses”

reassures me that what i said….this campus and community is in favor of white majority rule. Please stop making yourself look bad. You can believe whatever you want about middle class, but look around you my friend, whos getting richer and whos getting poorer, and also whos cultural values are being far more favored? its the white conservative community my friend. You even solidified my point by picking ONLY mexican independent day celebrations which clearly shows your bias. Of all the other ethnic groups you could name you picked the one that this community is racist towards and you cant even identify that within yourself…..shame on you. i bet your eating nachos, drinking tecate and dipping chips in salsa while picking up on hispanic chicks/dudes this weekend as you party arent you? dimwit!!

  19. Paige says:

I agree with the mexican are low class comments and are ruining Fresno State. Fresno State needs to do whatever they can to attract the white, affluent kids from Clovis Unified. They make the school much better. Don’t accept any kids from low class schools like Roosevelt, Mclane, Fresno High etc. Keep that filth at Fresno City College. Fresno State doesn’t need them stinking up the classrooms at the university. Fresno State needs to make sure that their enrollment practices result in a white majority and a mexican minority of less than 10%. The numbers now are absolutely terrible.

I SECOND THAT—–What other American citizens or permenant residents (green cards) come to this nation and take time off of work, school, etc. to celebrate a foreign nation’s independence day—–????? It’s scary when you think about it.

Cinco De Mayo is bad enough—but half of you young Latino/a people WERE BORN HERE—-many are not even Mexican nationals——it’s an affront to progressivism in the U.S. when your allegiance is primarily too your ancestors homeland.

the CSU curiculum speaks for itself—-we have a Chicano studies department—other ethnic studies departments as well——-a degree probably won’t land you a healthy job, however. Hearing about reconquista and Aztlan all day long kind of warps an otherwise bright mind.

Also, technically, Chicano, Latino, Mexican, Hispanic ——ISN’T EVEN A RACE—–so you are essentially saying the western european culture is too emphasized? Hardly—–I don’t see any Dutch-American fraternities or cultural awareness groups around these parts.

And Paige, you’re an idiot. what happened, did a Mexican use a dirty word against you? You’re logic is flawed.
