Sports brief: O’Neil leads second half surge, Bulldogs advance in WAC tourney

Senior guard Dwight O’Neil scored a go-ahead bucket with only 21.7 seconds remaining to complete the Bulldogs’ second-half comeback against the Hawaii Warriors in the WAC tournament play-in game.

The Bulldogs were down 28-23 at the half, and Hawaii pressed on, taking a 49-38 lead with 11:23 remaining in the game on a Roderick Flemings three-point play.

After Fleming’s three-point play, the Bulldogs began their comeback. This year, Steve Cleveland’s team has failed to close out games, but Tuesday night’s game proved the team could win late.

The Bulldogs got free throws down the stretch from Mychal Ladd and Brandon Sperling.

O’Neil had 11 of his 14 points in the second half. Junior forward Sylvester Seay led the Bulldogs with 16 points. Sophomore Ned Golubovic had 11 boards to lead Fresno State.

The Bulldogs advance in the WAC tournament and will face the No. 1 seed Utah State on Thursday. The Bulldogs have played the Aggies twice this season, losing by six points in overtime on Jan. 31 and only fours points on Jan. 15.
