UHS no longer employing arrested teacher
University High School’s board of officials held an emergency meeting at 5 p.m. Friday, after which it was announced that Jonathan McCoy Malcolm, 31, would no longer serve as a performing arts instructor for the school.
Malcolm had been a teacher at UHS since Aug. 28, 2005. His duties included teaching music theory classes as well as conducting the school’s instrumental groups, including an orchestra and jazz band.
Malcolm was arrested last Wednesday on two charges of distributing or displaying lewd material to a minor and one charge of annoying or molesting children under 18.
In a press conference held on Thursday afternoon, head of school Dr. James Bushman spoke aside Lt. Lupe Canales-Shrum. While Bushman was unable to comment about whether the school would be terminating Malcolm, he did not deny that they would take it under consideration.
“I would think everything is clearly on the table,” said Bushman after announcing the board’s emergency meeting at Thursday’s press conference.
The board is composed of eight members, including Fresno State representatives Dr. Vida Samiian, dean of the college of Arts and Humanities; Dr. Paul Beare, dean of the Kremen School of Education and Human Development; as well as instructors Dr. Michael Caldwell and Dr. Larry Cusick, from the departments of music and mathematics, respectively. Also on the board is former Fresno city councilman and current member of the Fresno County Board of Supervisors, Henry Perea, Sr.
After Friday’s meeting, which lasted about an hour and a half, Bushman was unable to confirm if the board had fired Malcolm, citing personnel issues. Bushman did say, however, that Malcolm would no longer be an employee of University High School.
While Bushman praised the swiftness with which the university police department was able to act on the allegations of Malcolm’s behavior, he also expressed “disappointment, sadness and anger” about the events.
“We are devastated that this has occurred on our campus,” Bushman said.

its sad that he was fired without really looking into the issue… he was a great teacher and a friend to all..

It is even more disturbing that two weeks after Jon Malcolm ‘s arrest, the DA has not charged him. The guy was thrown under the train, he lost everything and he is not even indicted or arraigned… Guilty or innocent, he should have the opportunity to defend himself in a court of law. Frightening and pathetic.
