Fresno State parent thankful for community’s generosity
I am writing you as the parent of a Fresno State student. Last month our daughter Teresa, a junior nutrition major, and her two roommates were forced to use their problem-solving skills when their University Bulldog apartment across the street from the school was gutted by fire.
This was very traumatic for the girls. However, within 24 hours of this disaster, the housing complex had another apartment in ready condition. Many of your faculty members provided meal cards for the girls, the Bulldog Book store raised $800 for their recovery needs and students across campus placed needed supplies such as clothing in drop boxes found around campus. In addition, the Red Cross organization was on site with immediate financial help for our daughter and her roommates.
The concept of serving the needs of the Valley and service to others is what makes Fresno State University a great educational institution.
Thank you Fresno State. Go Bulldogs!

Peace Garden offers perspective on community organizers
“Who is Maria De La Cruz? She is neither Obama’s ‘Chief of Staff’ nor his ‘biographer.’”
You seem quick to make ignorant generalizations, but you obviously haven’t done your homework.
If a community organizer to you is someone who merely serves soup, then César Chávez, Martin Luther King, and Gandhi must have all been serving some damn good soup.
If the names of these “soup servers” seem a little strange to you, I invite you to take a stroll through Fresno State’s very own Peace Garden where you can maybe learn a thing or two.
Community organizers mobilize the masses and give a voice to voiceless. These qualities are clearly some of the most important factors that distinguish a good president from a Bush or McCain.
And I’ll leave you with a quote from Gandhi. “A man is but the product of his thoughts, what he thinks he becomes.”
So be careful how you think and don’t forget to check out the Peace Garden.
