Hello everyone,
I just wanted to thank Joe E. for sticking up for the Fresno State women's lacrosse team. I, personally, know several girls that are on the team and they work very hard in what they do. They are up at 4:30am-5:00am every morning for practice at 6am. The sun is not even up and it is freezing cold outside that early in the morning. After practice they go straight home, take a shower (if there is time) go to class, go home from class, work on homework, lift weights and afterwards, (by this time it is about 7:30pm) cook dinner and off to sleep, hopefully to get in more than 4 hours of sleep until they have to wake up again and repeat. And to top it off, in between all of their daily tasks, they volunteer, the majority of them have jobs, deal with family and personal issues, mandatory study hours to attend, etc. Now if this is still "less dedicated", then I don't know what your definition of "dedication" is.

And as far as scholarships go, I am sorry for the issues that Title IX brings about for men's sports, however, why punish the women that receive these scholarships. It's not their fault that the issues around Title IX came about. And I give these girls props for going out, committing themselves to something unknown and working so hard in order to a) learn the game, b) get in shape, c) deal all of the negative comments that some people have said while maintaining their professionalism, attending school, work and personal lives.

The Collegian Staff Comment

Hey IceMane,
I understand your statements. They've been raised before and I suppose maybe there's some validity to what you say. I went to shoot that practice at 6 a.m. for the Collegian and I have to say that I have a new found respect for the young women who are trying their best to form a successful program. I've heard a lot of classmates cry about going to an 8 a.m. class, yet these girls are out on the practice field before the sun rises or the temperatures for that matter. That takes dedication. It's not their fault their caught in the middle of this bit of controversy. I think you said as much yourself. I'm not arguing any of your points, just giving my perspective I guess. Thanks for your comments. Go Lady Dogs lacrosse, I wish you the best.

A women's lacrosse team, especially in Fresno, is much less dedicated to a men's intercollegiate NCAA team. This is the problem with Title IX. While I respect those who have tried out for the team, many have no experience whatsoever. We have seen the same with sports programs across the country. Random college women being awarded scholarships to play a sport they have never been involved with before. Men who have toiled in a sport their entire life having that opportunity taken away in the interest of numbers. While the premise of Title IX makes sense and has some merit, changes are needed. At least provide an exemption for sports that generate revenue for schools and then go from there. Good luck Bulldogs and good luck ladies on your first season. Why we have added lacrosse at the expense of wrestling and other sports is a mystery to me.
