Middle Eastern melodies

The University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) Middle East Ensemble performed Saturday night as part of a three-day long Middle East Studies conference presented by the College of Arts and Humanities. Scott Marcus, music professor at UCSB, founded the ensemble in 1989.

The members of the UCSB Middle East Ensemble has performed from California and Arizona to Washington, D.C. as well as representing the U.S. at the 1999 International “Melodies of the East” held in Uzbekistan. On Saturday night, the UCSB ensemble performed music from cultures all across the Middle East. Israel, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Armenia and Egypt were all represented by the ensemble.
