Video Game Review: “NBA Live ’09″

Like most professional sport video games, the major changes in a game from year-to-year are primarily roster changes and player statistics. But “NBA Live ’09” features many new modes that make it a stand out from its competition.

The game’s main draw is its brand new feature: “NBA 365,” which is accessed by means of connecting the console to the internet. This feature automatically updates team roster changes, removes injured players and applies “hot and cold streaks” to players, meaning that if they are making changes in their real-life performance, their video game version will as well.

This feature goes hand-in-hand with a game mode, titled “NBA Rewind.” This lets the player relive the events of a game that was televised, as soon as the night before. The teams’ starting lineups will be the same as well as that particular game’s outcome. The player can choose to relive the game or play better to change the outcome of the game.

Both features are only available on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions of the game.

Despite such features, the game does have its drawbacks in terms of presentation. The graphics are not up to par with the title’s competition, “NBA 2K9” and instant replays are sometimes jerky and slow when playing.

Another issue is the tiny font used for in-game text and scores, which can be a bit unnerving.

Even with these issues, the game play itself and player animations still run smooth.

Other modes include “Be a pro mode,” “Dynasty mode” and “FIBA World Championship,” which includes international basketball from 24 countries. Online multiplayer modes that support up to four players are also available on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions.

I love NBA Live and I can’t wait to get the new version of the game. The last one I played was NBA Live 07 and it was my first sports game of the next generation. I hope the updated stats feature will be well implemented.
