Suspect in custody for bookstore robbery
University Police arrested a man early Wednesday morning at the Kennel Bookstore after responding to a burglar alarm call.
Jon Dailey, 19, was taken into custody around 2:25 a.m. Wednesday, according to University Police. Dailey, who is not a Fresno State student, faces three felony counts of burglary and also a misdemeanor charge of obstructing an investigation.
Officers were dispatched to the Kennel Bookstore and arrived 51 seconds later, according to police.
“When officers came into the building and asked him to surrender, he didn’t right away…” University Police spokesperson Amy Armstrong said. “And if you don’t come forward right away when officers are asking you to, that’s obstruction.”
Police K-9’s were on site but Dailey surrendered before the K-9’s were released.
Police wouldn’t comment on how Dailey made entry into the building or what his motive was.
Police have confirmed a connection between Dailey and three other University Police Department cases but police wouldn’t say what the cases entail, saying it’s still an ongoing investigation.
Many Fresno State students that The Collegian spoke to were surprised, including a bookstore employee who knew nothing about the break-in. Maricela Mendoza is a temporary bookstore employee and said the bookstore sometimes has problems with shoplifters but wouldn’t ever expect anything like this to happen.
The Kennel Bookstore management declined The Collegian’s request for an interview citing the matter is still under investigation.
As of press time, Dailey was still in Fresno County Jail on $40,000 bail.
