California State University, Fresno

This week in the Top 40

I’M GRADUATING THIS SEMESTER, BUT I recently found out about a list of 40 things Associated Students, Inc. has recommended every student do before graduation. In fact, “recommend” is probably too weak a verb — the list is titled “The Top 40 Things you MUST Do Before You Graduate.”

Frankly, I’ve never felt that sense of obligation.

ASI, though, says I must do these things, and there are a few I haven’t yet done, so maybe I really do need to.

Just to prove they’re serious, ASI has coordinated the list with a contest. Students who can provide proof of having completed at least half of the items automatically win tickets to a Grizzlies game along with two games of bowling, and will also be entered into a larger drawing.

Really, I don’t care about the prizes. Besides, I should be graduating in a few months, and so, effectively, have only half as much time as the majority of students to complete my 20 items.

I’ll probably have to rush this.

The challenge stipulate that students should “have completed at least half of these items since the start of your time at Fresno State,” and so I imagine I can’t count anything that extends beyond that time frame.

The first item on the list — “Register to vote” — is out, as I registered the day I turned 18.

I scan the list and quickly realize it will be nearly impossible for me to do any of the things I MUST do within the next few hours. I look frantically for something easy.

“Take a hike!” Not now. “Attend Vintage Days.” That’s going to be tough. “Be a non-drinking designated driver.” At noon?

Finally, near the bottom of the list: “Plug in these key numbers into your cell phone.”

One down. Watch me do this.
