Freshman shines at two-day tournament in Green Bay

The Fresno State volleyball team went 1-2 this weekend at the Country Inn and Suites/Green Bay Classic in Green Bay, Wisc.

The Bulldogs won Friday’s match 3-1 over Northern Arizona, but dropped both of their matches Saturday to University of Wisconsin – Green Bay and Drake.

In the Bulldogs’ opening match Friday, freshman Baylee Platt led the way with 21 kills and a .317 hitting percentage.

Fresno State dropped the first set of the match 21-25, but rebounded nicely to take three straight sets by scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-19 to clinch the match.

Tairyn Rasmussen added 10 kills for Fresno State and the team recorded a season-high .263 hitting percentage as a team.

However, the Bulldogs’ momentum did not carry over to Saturday as they dropped tough close matches.
Fresno State opened tournament play Saturday against Green Bay and took the first set of the match by a score of 25-21, but dropped the next two sets by scores of 21-25 and 17-25.

The Bulldogs’ bounced back to take the fourth set 25-22, but were defeated in the fifth set 10-15.

Platt continued her hot streak with a 19-kill performance to lead the team for the second straight math.

Kasey Van Grouw amassed a new career-high with 10 kills and Lacey Gera added 11 kills of her own.

Junior Allanah Munson had a new career-high also with her 52 assists in the match.

In its final match of the tournament, Fresno State had a similar result against Drake that it did against Green Bay.

After taking set one, the Bulldogs dropped sets two and three, but were able to rally together to win the fourth set.

However, Drake was able to take control and came away with the set-five victory and the match.

Platt recorded 18 kills in the final match of the tournament and was the only Bulldog named to the all-tournament team.

Rasmussen tied a career-high against Drake with 17 kills.

The Bulldogs will now head to Bakersfield for the Cal State Bakersfield Tournament, which starts Friday at 7 p.m.

Fresno State’s next home match isn’t until Sept. 27 when the Bulldogs open conference play against San Jose State at the Save Mart Center.
