BREAKING NEWS: Welty approves IRA increase
University President John D. Welty revealed exclusively to The Collegian on Tuesday morning that he has decided to accept the Campus Fee Advisory Committee’s recommendation to increase student fees by $52, with $20 going to academics and $32 going to athletics.
The increase is down from the $70 Instructionally Related Activities (IRA) fee increase that students voted against in the fee referendum last month.
Welty said he made the decision because there are several programs and academic projects that would be in serious jeopardy if the additional revenue were not made available. With regards to athletics, Welty said that it’s an issue of fairness.
“The community has provided significant support for [the athletics] program over the years,” he said. “If we’re going to continue, everyone has to pay part of the cost of the program.”
Welty said he made his decision after careful consideration.
“It’s important that I don’t take the issue of raising student fees lightly,” he said. “It’s a difficult decision.”
The official announcement regarding the fee increase is expected this afternoon.

This was not a difficult decision, all Welty had to do was sign away a paper and raise our fees. He never once approached students to ask how we feel.
He let the Student Advisory fee committee do his dirty work and they let themselves be puppets. This is not about fairness and equality its all about the costly Division-I football program that many other CSU campuses do not have anymore because it cost too much to maintain.
Im begining to realize that our administration doesnt want to provide us a good education with researhc and studying, this has become a business that wants to keep few administrators with high paid salaries and watered down education.
Its not about education anymore its all about the money.
anyone agree disagree?

Scandalous decision with the full array of awful fiscal problems dominating campus life.
I tried using the Peters Building computer lab on Wednesday——-at least 12 computers were not working, not printing, and a good half dozen others had been scratched or vandalized. I wasted at least $10 on printing and couldn’t find a seat at an open computer for a solid 20 minutes.
Has anyone stepped in one of the quad building classrooms of late? It’s an utter disgrace—–so this is where increased funding is going? Women’s lacrosse and paying for Welty’s mistakes?
Why would the proposition be presented to students if Welty was going to just dismiss the vote and cover his ass?
