Bulldog tennis to host two rounds in NCAA Regional
The No. 16 Fresno State women’s tennis team earned the right to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA regional tournament.
The Bulldogs won the right to host the regional after winning their seventh-straight Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championship tournament in Las Cruces, N. M.
It will be the 13th-straight NCAA Tournament appearance for Fresno State.
They have reached the Sweet 16 three out of the past four seasons.
Fresno State, which earned a No. 16 seed in the tournament, will take on Lamar in the opening round on Friday, May 9 at 1 p.m.
Arizona State and Sacramento State will face off in the early match of the day on Friday.
The winner of each first-round match will face off to determine the regional winner.
Lamar University, located in Beaumont, Tex., earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament after winning the Southland Conference Title last week.
The Lady Cardinals are 22-2 on the year and have never met the Bulldogs
No. 21 Arizona State is 14-7 on the season but were ranked as high as No. 12. Fresno State has lost in both matches against the Sun Devils, once last year and once in 2003.
Arizona State, who has two top-30 players, did have a tough PAC-10 schedule where they beat UCLA.
Sacramento State is 21-6 on the year and earned an automatic bid after winning its seventh-straight conference title in the Big Sky Conference.
The Bulldogs are 7-2 against Sacramento State historically, including a victory last year.
Fresno State is led by three-time WAC Player of the Year, Melanie Gloria.
Gloria is ranked second nationally in doubles with her partner, Tinesta Rowe. Gloria is ranked No. 16 in singles.
Teammates Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova are ranked No. 33 in doubles.
