First Nations pow wow

Fresno State’s First Nations American Indian Student Organization hosted a traditional pow wow on campus Saturday.
More than 40 tribes attended the celebration.
Richard Clark, a 16-year-old from Bakersfield, comes from a family tradition of participating in pow wows.
“I got interested [in pow wow] from my dad and grandfather when I was about five,” Clark said.
Cornel Pewawardy, a professor from Kansas, said, “Pow wow is for honoring veterans, young people, celebrating culture, all kinds of things.”

Unfortunate to see what damage the U.S. has done to current Indian populations in terms of general health…that’s what a bad diet will do to a traditional food race of people

I agree Chest. That said, the Native Americans I talked to on Saturday were very upbeat about keeping their customs strong. It was evident by the number of nations that participated as well as the diversity in age groups…from young kids 5 or 6 years old to older people in their sixties and probably beyond. It was nice to see a culture that has been through so much have such a turnout and drive to keep their traditions alive.
