The way I understand it, the “divorce rate” amounts to half the number of people who got married in a year, but the number of divorces in a year is unrelated to that. Basically, what’s going on is that half as many people get divorced every year as get married, but the number of people who COULD get divorced is a very big number and has nothing to do with those who get married.

And what is so bad about divorce anyway, besides making a bad choice in life partners? It wasn’t that long ago when women weren’t allowed to get a divorce unless they had a good reason (according to a judge). Of course, kids suffer from divorce, but being locked into a marriage for the sake of marriage is much worse than separating and getting half of your spouse’s stuff!

However, I agree that attitudes have changed and we’re much more liberalized in general when it comes to romantic relationships, which can lead to cynicism. I say good for us!
