A more interesting question would be how many people who DO attend the Rogue in the Tower WOULDN’T attend if it were held on the CSUF campus? I suspect that would be a far greater number than the number of FSU students who won’t go to the Tower.
I’d also be interested to see the interviews with students whose answers didn’t fit into the answer this question funneled them into.

The Collegian Staff Comment
Actually, we only left out one comment and that was because the person interviewed gave us a single word answer. Every person we talked to had never heard of the Rogue Festival. We had to explain what it was and where it was being held. Because of the lack of knowledge of the festival, we had to tailor our question to the answers given. Honestly, it would have been nice to get some alternate views on the location, but that’s why we have this comment section so that people who DO know what the festival is can state their opinion. And just a side note, we alter our questions according to the answers we receive, not the other way around.

Rogue isn’t fresno state, they might as well ask the question “Why aren’t the 2008 Olympics at Fresno State?”
Yeah, I’m sure it would be more convenient for CSUF students if it was at CSUF.
The Rogue festival has it’s marketing downfalls, but putting it at State probably won’t help it.
I’m sorry, I think this is just poor journalism. You should have asked, “What could the Rogue do to increase involvement and attendance?” Or how about, “Do you plan on attending Rogue? If not, why?”

I had never heard of Rogue until a week ago when I got an assignment to go down there and it was awesome, Tower district has an artsy atmosphere that connects with the feel of Rogue and that probably attracts a larger number of people and artists than Fresno State would. Plus some acts are rated R and even though this is college, Fresno State seems more conservative in its events.
I think students should get off the campus and see more parts of town and the valley, especially if they aren’t from here. I think its a better learning experience when you step out side your comfort zone and branch out. Travel the world, starting at home.

“Do you plan on attending the Rogue Festival this year” would’ve been good. And even if you received an “I don’t know what that is,” at least a discussion could’ve been sparked.

Collegian Online is a great thing. I love the blending of media it uses.
Bryan makes some good suggestions for questions that could have been asked. And if you didn’t get the responses you could use – a discussion of why the word on the Rogue isn’t getting out to FSU students would have made an interesting piece. That could spin off into a question that asks about the resources students on campus have to find out about and participate in off-campus community activities.

Our original question was “Do you plan on going to the Rogue Festival and why?” People then asked what it was and where it was being held. Also, if you look at the video the question posed at the beginning is “Would you be more likely to attend the Rogue Festival if it were on campus?”

I think this speaks much more to the issues that Fresno has with image and identity. There is this fear among people of everyting south of Shaw. If you cross Shaw you’re in a ‘bad’ part of town. If we could get people to realize that the real life and heartbeat of the city is not what the latest chain store has opened (Riverpark) but rather what new restaraunt/bar/club/store someone decided to open themselves. What did someone decided to create and showcase. We can create our own life and not have to rely on the the rest of the world to provide it for us.

Amazing how the most compelling, controversial story this week is a man-on-the-street video.
These videos are meant to be a sampling of the student voices, not an in-depth study of the chosen topic. Apparently, most students are unaware of the festival, which would make a question about increasing awareness of the festival, for example, impossible to answer.

I realize I’m a little late to this party, but I must throw in my two cents.
First off, the Rogue is not hurting for audience. The Rogue is the largest arts festival of its kind west of the Mississippi. It’s far larger than comparable festivals in San Francisco, San Diego and Boulder. I am reliably informed that attendance at the 2008 Rogue Festival topped 10,000. Have 10,000 people ever attended an independent arts event held at Fresno State?
Second, the Rogue is committed to building Fresno as a community, most especially in bringing people to the Tower District and downtown. Cloistering a community event on a college campus is a disservice to the rest of the community.
Thirdly, I have no idea where this “I have never heard of the Rogue” thing comes from. The Rogue has been in existence for 7 years. Every year the Rogue is heavily advertised on radio and TV. The Rogue gets extensive print coverage in the Bee, the Undercurrent and Community Alliance. I would submit that if you haven’t heard of the Rogue, you are remarkably oblivious to what’s going on in the community. Venturing south of Shaw sometime might help you become aware of the many amazing events that happen in this community all year long.
