Softball tournament preview

The Fresno State softball team will travel to San Diego this weekend for the Campbell Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State.

The Bulldogs will play Indiana and Tulsa on Friday, and on Saturday they will play UC Santa Barbara and San Diego State.

The Bulldogs are currently 2-0 after last weekend’s wins over the University of Pacific.

Indiana
The Hoosiers are 21-12-1 all-time in season openers and are 1-1 all-time in season openers agaisnt schools from the state of California. In 2005, the Hoosiers lost 1-0 to Cal State Northridge and in 2003, they beat San Jose State, 4-2. The last time the Hoosiers opened a season in the state of California was 1999.

• Last meeting: 2002.

• Series leader: Fresno State, 3-0.

•Indiana last season: 21-34.

•Last NCAA Tournament appearance: 2006

•Current record: Bulldogs will be first matchup.

Tulsa
The Hurricane finished third in league last season with a 30-28 overall record and 13-10 record in C-USA play. Last season, six freshmen started for the first time since 2002 and the Hurricane posted its sixth consecutive winning record.

• Last meeting: 2006.

• Series leader: Fresno State, 25-5.

•Tulsa last season: 30-28.

•Last NCAA Tournament appearance: 2006

•Current record: 2-2.

UC Santa Barbara
The 2007 team had an overall record of 30-23 and a 7-11 finish in Big West Conference play. The Gauchos made their third NCAA Tournament appearance in school history and their third appearance in four years. The Gauchos played six nationally-ranked teams and beat three ranked teams.

• Last meeting: 2005.

• Series leader: Fresno State, 55-10.

•UCSB last season: 30-23.

•Last NCAA Tournament appearance: 2007

•Current record: 1-3.

San Diego State
The Aztecs ended the 2007 season in fifth place after winning the Mountain West Conference title in 2006. Eight players are returning from last season’s squad, which has beat Cal Poly, Cal, UC Davis and Portland State

• Last meeting: 2006.

• Series leader: Fresno State, 50-6.

• SDSU last season: 32-24.

• Last NCAA Tournament appearance: 2006

•Current record: 4-1.
