‘Dog Bites
Men’s Basketball
Cal State Bakersfield hosted the Bulldogs Saturday and ran away with a 65-64 win.
Junior Santwon Latunde led the Roadrunners with 13 points and made the game-winning basket with 1:39 remaining in the game.
Bulldog guard Kevin Bell had a game-high 19 points and six assists. Forward Hector Hernandez had 14 points and 11 rebounds and was the only other Bulldog to reach double-figures.
The Bulldogs were 7-14 from three in the first half and hit just one of seven three-pointers in the second half.
The Bulldogs, now 2-2, will host Montana State on Wednesday at the Save Mart Center at 7 p.m.
Women’s Basketball
The Bulldogs lost 78-59 to BYU, last year’s Mountain West Conference champion, at the Marriott Center on Saturday.
Senior guard Tierre Wilson had 14 points, six rebounds and two steals. Freshman Marnique Arnold added 11 points and senior Erica Henry had a team-high eight rebounds.
Senior guard Jennifer Leaks had four steals in just nine minutes of play.
The Bulldogs shot 30 percent from the field and forced 19 turnovers.
BYU was led by Mallary Carling’s 17 points and Shawnee Slade’s 16. The Cougars shot 47 percent from the floor.
The Bulldogs return home next Saturday for an 11 a.m. tip off at the Save Mart Center against Big 12 foe, Oklahoma State.
Volleyball
Fresno State has announced that Buchanan High School seniors Brianna Clarke and Baylee Platt have signed national letters of intent to play volleyball for the Bulldogs in 2008-2009.
Clarke is a 6-foot-1-inch middle blocker and Platt is a 5-foot-10-inch outside hitter.
This season, they led Buchanan to the Central Section Championship in Division I.
Clarke was also recruited by Western Athletic Conference teams Nevada and New Mexico State.
As a junior, Clarke was named to the first team All-Tri River Athletic Conference.
This is the second year in a row that Fresno State has signed two players out of the Central Cal Volleyball Club.
Central Cal’s Sarah Oskam and Kasey Van Grouw joined the ’Dogs in 2007.
The Bulldogs finish the season at the University of the Pacific Banker’s Classic, Nov. 23-24 in Stockton, Calif. Tournament teams include, UOP, Fresno State, St. Mary’s and Cincinnati.
